Country of origin: Ethiopia

Current country: U.S.A.

Random fact about you: I have been told I have excellent penmanship. For the record, I did get 2nd place for a calligraphy competition in elementary school. 1st place went to some middle schooler… boo. Joking aside, 2nd place was a humbling experience, you are constantly in the “push your limits” zone, so you strive to do better and never be satisfied.

Bucket list item: Can I do three items? Travel as much as possible, improve on the languages I already know (4) and pick up new ones along the way, Arabic, German (bitte!), or maybe even Chinese or Japanese. Lastly, learn awesome dance moves. I think this is the only exercise that never gets old.

How old were you when you left your home country? A confused teenager in junior high school.

Are you staying in the USA? Yes, but if by some miracle I get to travel and rotate living in different countries every 4-5 years, that will be cool, too!

What has moving taught you? Change is hard and rewarding. But, it gets tricky because you do lose a bit of your identity. I think the sense of belonging and the need to connect with your roots is something that we all want at the end of the day. The biggest lesson that I have learned is that being humble goes a long way.

What do you miss about your home country? The food, culture, and the ability to socialize without being overly concerned about costs.

Where is home for you? Home is where you form your memorable friendships. Home is where the connection happens… not necessarily the physical country.

What do you not like about your current country? Can we build modern train systems and eliminate standardized tests? Seriously, look how far Japanese have gone with their train systems and have much Finland has accomplished as far as the educational system goes. Teachers are professionals and they actually get a say in how a curriculum is run.
