Malika: France -> USA

Country of origin: France

Current country: USA

Random fact about you: I like being part of something big or interesting without anybody really knowing about it… (but knowing about the big thing). I like working in the shadows.

Bucket List Item: I wanna go skydiving!

How old were you when you left your home country? I was 21, going on 22 that year. It was during spring in 2006.

Why did you leave your home country? I left for professional reasons. I had just graduated the previous year, and I needed the experience and skills to be able to move forward in my career. I wanted to manage or own my own hotel at some point, and the hospitality industry is very much international by nature, so I wanted to be completely fluent in English and have that experience of working abroad.

Plus, I’ve always wanted to travel the world anyway… The US were just the first stop (or so I thought!).

What made you choose the country you currently live in? I went about it in a very logical way. My criteria were:

  • Distance from my home country
  • Language (it had to be an English speaking country)
  • Weather (I did get lucky, but Canada was a little too far north for my tastes)
  • Visa requirements (I met the criteria, but also the visa allowed me to to what I wanted to do – I could expand on that, but the explanation might get a little long)

What do you not like about your current country? Nothing! Well, maybe it was just a little too familiar and comfortable… But I wanted more for my career, I did not want to feel limited to what I could do within that industry.

Are you going to stay in your current country? Maybe. We’ll see about long term…. I am not opposed to uproot myself again. I definitely think that retirement should be enjoyed elsewhere.

What has your move taught you?

That I am smart enough to stand on my own two feet, capable of making the right decisions for myself and that there is so much more to experience in this world than anybody could ever imagine if they stayed in their geographic comfort zone.

What do you miss about your home country?

Duhhhh: THE FOOD!!! & my family and close friends…

Where is home for you? I don’t know. I don’t know if I can call where I grew up home, or is it my current country, or the next? I feel both homeless & at home anywhere I decide to make it “my home”…

Would you move back? Under which circumstances? Do you want to move back? I may move back to France. I am not planning on it. And I can’t come up with any other reason I would move back other than ” I want to”.

If you could do your move again, what would you do differently?

Nothing! I aced it the 1st time around!!! I had everything I wanted & needed:

  • the support of my family to go explore the world (& myself);
  • enough money to get buy for the first weeks;
  • a steady job that would bring me financial/material comfort, but also the experience and skills I needed;
  • great weather practically year round that would let me enjoy the best LA/Southern California has to offer!
