Interview with Jelly Fish Float Spa in Canada

Roi from Jelly Fish Float Spa answered the Traveling Floater’s questions about floating and his center:

Where did you hear about floating first?
We heard floating first in my Psychology Class, lovingly and accurately referred to as Sensory Deprivation. Later on we stumbled upon the piece Vice did. And then ran into roller coaster of events that led us to opening our own.

What made you decide to open your own floating business?

We wanted to invest in our health, we were convinced that the float tank is the perfect tool, especially at this time in our hyper connected society. It was the antidote. We also did not have a float centre during 2013 in our City, so we found the perfect opportunity to open one. The float tank was our north star.

What’s the best part about it?

The best part about floating is knowing the amount of healing that can take place. Its uniqueness and obscurity (not so much anymore) is what drew us into buying one float tank and opening a 3 tank center in less than a year. No questions asked, no if’s or buts, just pure source, inspiration, healing, creativity, productivity and mindfulness.

How known is floatation therapy in your country?

Very well now. We are quite confident it is the next big things. Especially with the advancement of digital technology.

What is being done to make it more known – what do you do?

We invest in people. This is a system that works well for us as a business. We take pride to provide ‘the best float experience in Winnipeg’ and it demostrates. We use our networks locally and internationally to bring about awareness of Float Therapy, by utilizing the digital playground, networking opportunities, fund raisers, contacting influencers, social media advertising and a conundrum of various techniques and tools, all available for businesses use. We are also actively involved in our community building efforts.

How many tanks do you have?

We currently have 2 Float Pods and 1 Oasis Float Tank

What’s different/unique about your center?

What makes us unique amongst the others in our City is that we are the only Float Center, that provide a diversity in the  Float Environment, having different styles of Float tanks/pods provides a unique opportunity for our clients to experience what it is like to Float in a Pod style vs Tank Style. We also offer 60, 90 and 120 minute float sessions. We have nurtured a space that is simple, modern, and healing, that is quite attractive from a design perspective.

What makes people come to you?

From what we have gathered people, especially the first timers, prefer a Pod Style Float Environment, due to its size, options to have the light on. We also have a customizable play list for audio. pre float, letting them know they are in full control is quite important to create a “wow experience”. We train each of employees to understand the degree of sensitivity, that is required to guide a new floater into, what can be a powerful experience. It is paramount to understand the power of a float, pre or post.

What’s a No-go for a floating center?

A No go would be tricking clients by providing inconsistent information, whether it be service quality or a lack of empathy. What I mean by empathy is, understanding that as even as a “for profit” business, it is still beneficial to step out of that stereotype and learn to let go of the dogma, and desire to make money all of the time – one example, charging cancellation fees, we understanding life happens. This is something I can talk about for hours, the goal is to keep it brief, if you need more, please contact me directly.
