Austin Coons, founder and owner of Forever Floating Health Spa in Paddington was interviewed via Skype about floating and his centre:

Where did you hear about floating first?

I heard about first from the popular Joe Rogan video back in 2011. Originally, when I heard about it I just thought it was something that famous people do. For some reason I thought it was a huge pool – the size of a room – that you float all around in. I thought it was like $1.000 a session.

What made you decide to open your own floating business?

I used to be in law. Didn’t like that. Then I got into finance. Didn’t like that. Then I was thinking about things I like to do. And one of them was float. So I thought I would just open up a float tank center.

What’s the best part about it?

Besides being able to float whenever you want, it’s probably the smile on people’s faces when they come out of the rooms.

How known is floatation therapy in your country?

I’m probably the wrong person to ask because everyone I talk to knows about it. In the general public it’s still pretty fringed. Most people aren’t that interested or they just haven’t heard about it.

What is being done to make it more known – what do you do?

No, not really, because I’m not too involved in social media. We’re just trying to concentrate on getting people the best float possible and if they share it with others, that’s how we go about it.

How many tanks do you have?

We have four right now, but we have room for seven, so we’re going to go up. We’re still in the build-out stage for the next three. So hopefully we’ll have seven within the next month or month and a half.

What’s different/unique about your center?

We have a lot of people saying that it feels like their home. It’s a pretty relaxed atmosphere here. Everything’s pretty simple. I just try to make everything as natural as possible. The whole reception area is just filled with plants and living walls and all the furniture is wood. A lot of people also say that other places are corporate.
I don’t think this is unique but if there’s no one booked after, you can just continue at no cost, so usually Tuesdays or Wednesdays are our slower days. So people come in Tuesday or Wednesday and just book one float but do doubles or triples.

What makes people come to you?

We’re pretty inexpensive and we have a good location.

We don’t do couples floats, even though the tanks would fit them, just because it defeats the whole purpose. You bump up against each other and you hear each other.
Also, a lot of people choose tanks based on their looks rather than their quality, so that’s definitely a no-go.
